Your Internship Presentation of Learning
Put together your POL. You can choose any format you want ( prezi, PowerPoint, presentation board, info graphic, video, etc...) Combine Section 1 & 2 together into a lovely presentation. Your Internship POL should be approximately 10-15 minutes long, and cover the following basic topics ( Monday and Tuesdays blog posts) 1. A presentation of your project, which should represent a culmination of your work that is meaningful to both your organization and you. 2. A thoughtful articulation of some of your ideas about the professional world as well as your reflections of your personal growth during your internship experience. Include your thoughts about the importance of advocacy and communication. * A short question and answer session will follow your 10-minute presentation. Please initiate a round of questions after your presentation. Be sure to consider the following: 1. You will need to show "evidence" (which can come in a multitude of forms): photos, videos, work samples, quotes, performance reviews, etc. 2. Your blog entries, mentor interviews & photos will be very helpful in preparing for your POL, and provide some of the raw material to create your POL. 3. Every internship is different, so every POL needs to be different. There is no script. 4. There will be a question & answer session (hopefully a conversation) at the conclusion of your presentation. 5. Internship POL's are graded as "pass" or "re-do." We are looking for legitimate thought & reflection as evidenced by a high quality, thoughtful presentation & conversation. 6. The POL is a formal presentation and appropriate attire is expected. (Unless presentation expectations have been worked out with your mentor and internship advisor)Like all the other POLs, remember that you will also be assessed on eye contact, voice, and tone. Here is the IPOL evaluation form. Look on tomorrow's blog post for my presentation powerpoint! You will be putting together yesterday's and today's entry as your TPOL on FRIDAY. For some, yesterday's post was not detailed enough. You need to make sure you are not broad but DETAILED WITH DOCUMENTED EVIDENCE ( photos, documents, video etc) of your internship work and reflections. Keep in mind you POL should last 10-15 minutes not 5 minutes. 1. What new appreciations did you develop while working as an intern? Why? 2. What qualities or characteristics did you see in the people around you that you want to develop in yourself? Why? 3. How did your view of life beyond high school change or develop during your time as an intern? 4. How might internship influence the direction of your life? 5. How did communication and/or collaboration at work influence your understanding of professional working environments? As an intern, I've noticed a huge difference from a school environment and a work environment. I've realized that 'time' is such a helpful tool in managing work, or any situation. If you procrastinate, your then behind on work and that you would have to make-up, while your finishing up work for another day. If you leave everything at the last minute, chances are your not performing your best and what good is that?! So managing my time is one value I have grown to appreciate and grown fond of.
During my stay at Sekisui, everyone around me seemed to obviously understand the work they do and while I would worked on my assignments and project, I wanted to do the same for myself. It's a real bother when I don't fully comprehend a concept I'm learning. Especially since I just started learning about the Engineering Field an my first encounter to it. I also noticed that in the Manufacturing Lab while all the employees where filling in their responsibilities, they were also open with each other and connected with one another. Being surrounded by what your interested in and a group of people you could have relationships with is definitely an environment I would want to place myself into. Throughout the month, I realized that sooner or later I would be going back to school and with that in mind I knew I wouldn't be in the "adult work environment" anymore. But it did get my thinking about the time when I would be on my own and obtain a job. Not only that but an open perspective on how there could be different environments for a work setting. As of right now, I go from class to class, wrting down notes, completing homework/projects and eventually taking quizzes or tests and presenting it all at an exhibition. At Sekisui, I already had tasks that I knew had to be done and afterwards would either discuss other assignments with my mentor finish an assignment that I was already assigned to. I had to manage my time and tasks to where I knew when they would be completed to move on to the next one. Internship has been such a great experience, that it not only helped me grow as a learner but it also gave me an idea of where I would want to go after high school. I certainly know that I still want to go towards the Engineering Field still. It's not possibly to say at this moment with just a month of experience that I'm not interested in that path. I barely learned a spec of what Engineering is and still have much to learn. Plus, since I've always interested in Aerospace Engineering and in becoming an Astronaut, it wouldn't feel right to just give up on that dream, So internship has given me a clear mind in one part of my future. Since Sekisui is about quailfiing equipment and products through many experients, tests, and data, people need to communicate all of those to fully understand and evaluate the situation accurately. There were times when I didn't communicate very well with my mentor and that showed him that I wasn't responsible or that he couldn't put his trust on me. Once I realized that, I noticed a change of direction and immediately started asking question for clarification and made sure I did any of my task correctly. I noticed that without communication, not everyone is on the same page and there are situation where something could happen and could affect the company. So making sure that the people you work with understand the problem and well as yourself will help deliver positive results. Well everyone, this is the happy last week of internship! In preparation for your Internship POL this Friday, these next few blog post will support you in putting together your POL - make sure you check the Internship website every day this week!!!! Today's post covers Section 1 of your IPOL. Today's blog post covers SECTION 1 of your IPOL: Be sure to write out all your reflections on today's blog posts. POL Section 1—Your work as an intern Reflect on the following list of questions to guide a thoughtful reflection about your internship experience and project(s). Be descriptive and display evidence(s) for your answers. 1. How did you make a meaningful contribution to your workplace? 2. How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education? 3. How was your work significant or meaningful for you beyond school and your specific internship site? 4. How did your project(s) go from an idea or inspiration to a final product? Share out the process & be sure to upload evidence(s) of this work. 5. What did you learn about yourself through working on the internship project(s)? Wow! It's my last week of Internship! During my experience at Sekisui Diagnostics, from being been here and there, helping co-works and assisting help on assignments, not only from inserting data onto an excel sheet but to being surrounded by others who seem to care about my education has been such a memorable experience. Even if I didn't build any machine, or design one, I feel that my presence at Sekisui has brought a change in the company. Many have told me, "This is just less work for me". Yes, I absolutely knew that. But hearing it come from then, shows that I have helped them in such a little way for them to worry about one less thing. It also shows that when I finish on Friday, I won't be there to do those assignments any more.
Working at Sekisui has not only taught me the value of communication, precession, and learning but mostly on the path I would take in the future. As an intern, you learn more about the "Work World" and the "Do's" and "Don'ts" that follow with it. I have a clear understanding about the choices I would make that would help me in making my future a better one. One value that I have grown to do a lot more (then I already have) is communication. It is the main factor in helping you move towards the next step. Internship has definitely opened up my eyes. I notice that I'm much more aware of my surroundings. Since the beginning of day one, my project was already set-up. It wasn't an idea that later developed into a bigger project. But it sure benefited the company to further progress in their work. As I've been mentioning in my recent blog posts, I have been working on a pump filling process improvement project and that I've been helping by gathering data and going through the DMAIC Process that would help us improve the product. So, throughout my internship I've been defining, measuring, analyzing, improving and maintaining data. As the weeks went by, I've seen a difference in who I am. I have many more new points that I've have either grown in or developed. I would have to say that the three main points that I would consistency see were my communication skills (as if I haven't said that enough), independence, and maturity. Happy Friday! We can't believe Internship is just 1 week away from being done. Internship is such a wonderful experience that practices what HTHI is all about - projects, presentation, media skills, communication, and more... 1) What other elements from your internship experience can teachers LOGICALLY replicate in our classrooms? And give applicable ideas that teachers can do. 2) What new skills and/or perspective are you going to bring into your student practice to improve your academic performance? Wow! I can't believe I'm saying (well technically writing) this, but there's only one more week of internship left!! Time has gone by too fast for me to say goodbye to my time at Sekisui. But then again, I'm able to take away everything I've learned and gained from my experience to my normal school schedule. If anything I believe that I could bring new ideas to my teachers. One idea I definitely feel my teachers could take in would be allowing their students to rely on themselves. Since HTHI is a project based school where we create group projects, I feel that working in a group of one would be a lot more beneficial. Because Internship puts you in an environment where you're on your own, you tend to gravitate towards figuring out situations by yourself. Which puts you in the spot of asking questions, managing your time, and learning the way you do best and not your peers. Another idea teachers could replicate in their classrooms (which could relate to the idea above) would be to let their students figure out information on their own. Well not completely on their own but after a lesson is taught, the students would need to go through the process of the next step and give some explanation afterwards to fully understand what they are producing,
Wondering what your fellow interns are doing? For today's post you are going to read and comment on 3 other interns' blogs ( located under blogroll tab). Your assignment is 1) post comments on each of the 3 blogs 2) on your blog - Write down the names of the internship blogs you read/commented AND write down any takeaways that you may have from reading other internship experiences. Viewing my peers Internship blogs, I could definitely tell they were having a wonderful experience. Today I looked at a little more than 3 blogs. (Mia, Priya, Cece, Jacob, Alin. and Franky)
In general, every single person has learned a great amount about the company they are interning at. Mia- She has developed a great skill in creating lesson plans on her own for kindergarteners. Priya- While she has only been at her Internship for a couple of days, she has tremendously grown in realizing her full potential in herself and her future. Cece- With her creative and artistic mind, Cece has created a brochure that will help create awareness about dogs and making better choices when it comes to adopting. Jacob- As fantastic it is to work at a place he's passionate about, it doesn't top out helping people in an everyday life situation in criminal justice. Alin- Along with her driviness, Alin continues to make a change in not only todays generation but also for the futures generation about Women's History and Rights. Franky-Although he may be giving children candy, it comes with a new way to help children learn a topic(fractions) that will engage them to want to learn more. After reading all of their blog posts, I noticed I've been developing their skills as well. Even though I might not always be using them. Either way, we all have been working on a project that will help benefit, not only us, but the company as well. So thought the past couple weeks, we have become a new generation that will help empower our minds for our future. This is your first FULL week at your internship site. How different is it compared to school? Compare and contrast the work week with the school week. How are your responsibilities, work, interactions, and time different? How might internship influence the direction of your life? What can you bring from internship to who you are in school? Yes! I've managed to survive the 1st full week of Internship. I also can't believe that there's only two more weeks left that will probably go by fast. But unlike school, my internship environment is completely different in its own ways. First off, I'm surrounded by adults only. Meaning, I have to act mature, aware, and even more responsible then how I am already. I'm not saying that I don't have any of those characteristics already but when your working for a company you need to get your priorities straight. Even though I socialize at school and High Tech High International is a project based school that involves a lot of group work, I've noticed that I've needed to communicate a whole lot more at Sekisui. Since every employee has their own set of assignments and I have my own tasks, that sometimes involve others help I'm consistently communicating. Also, with the tasks I'm given and am still learning, I ask my mentor to clarify, review, rephrase, and demonstrate so I could fully understand the concept. I would have to say the only reason school and my internship are different is by the level of maturity I present in each setting.
During school hours, from 8:25-3:25 I'm given homework that is either due by the end of the class, day, or week. During my Internship hours, from 8:30-3:30, I'm given mini projects, including my main project, that has to be done by a certain time or could be done by the end of the day. But I've been needing to manage my time and set which task have to be done first, second and last. I would have to say that there is less stress working at my Internship then at school. I have a sense of what work I'll be doing throughout the day and during school I could be learning a new concept that needs to be learned in a day or two. So who knows what I'll be doing next?! When I'm given a task or assignment by my mentor, he expects me to complete it and either give a description/explanation from what I noticed. At school, I'm given an assignment that my teacher hands me and has the idea of me completing it by its due date. I have responsibilities at both places but I feel more accountable at my Internship site. My experience at Sekisui has taught me many things. From thinking, observing, communicating, becoming independent, connecting ideas, accepting the idea of fear and failing, and most of all my interest in engineering. I'm consistently visualizing my future when I have a part-time job, drive, am on my own, college and so much more. I feel that I will relate my experience to all of the above. For example, when I starting working again, I'll remember that the 1st day is the hardest, that I'll have to face my fear of asking questions (which is sort of ironic since I always ask questions) and how I'll have to start figuring things out on my own. I will also use my experience to decide whether I want to continue the same process or a new one. It's taken my perspective on life to many new views that will help me choose the path that I want to go towards. Well, it hasn't happened it but when they day comes to waking up at 6:00 am and driving to Internship to waking up around 6:40 am and heading to school. I feel that I'll be viewing everything differently. I feel as if I'll be expecting my peers to be more mature and skilled from what they learned. Since the adults at Sekisui have knowledge on what they work on (or I at least hope they do), I visualize myself becoming frustrated or angered at my classmates for not knowing something. As if it was common. I have this fear that I won't be my old self that talks in "LOL", "OMG" language. But since I'll be working on explaining processes, producing quality work as well as being direct with others, that will most definitely help once I start back at school. It will lead me towards expanding my work in a variety of ways and my further my knowledge. I'm sure that I will notice the difference in the way I approach new situations and how I introduce them. I won't view myself as a "girl who doesn't know much" but to a "girl who is becoming an independent women who is able to accomplish anything once she sets her mind to it"! Recognizing you have been at internship for almost a week, you probably have a good handle on the project(s) you will be working on for the remainder of your internship. Describe what your project(s) is/are, the development of your project so far, include any links, documents, or photos about your project. Please also describe your next steps. ** Remember to be descriptive with your project details. We want to be able to fully understand your project(s) by what you write in your blog. Wow! Already a week at my internship and it seems like its only been about 2 days. From the beginning of internship, my mentor already had a project for me to work on. I came in at the right time where one of the machines had a non-working part that affected its products. It might not seem as great for the company but how convenient is it that I was looking for a place to intern at, that involved engineering where one of the equipment parts wasn't working properly. I will be working on an Automated Filling Machine and a pump filling process. Behind the machine are two bowls where small vials and caps are placed in. The machine places the vials correctly which then slides down to where liquid is placed in the vial. Next, the bowl with the caps, is given the correct value that spins the cap on the vial. The 2nd to last step would be where to machine give the right amount of torque to make sure the cap will not fall off or is neither too loose or too tight. Then the vials are slided across to workers who place them in boxes. Before I even began my project, there were a few terms I had to start memorizing. 1. Cp- Process Capability 2. Cpk 3.SD- Standard Deviation 4. Six Stigma- DMAIC: Define/Measure/Analyze/Improve/Control They are all connected from the data to the machine. Even though this is such a new environment and subject that I've needed to become used to, I still need to understand how all of these components connect with each other. I've learned so much, but I haven't been working at this as long as my mentor has, so I still got a long way ahead of me.
Describe the physical space you work in. Try to paint a picture so that we all can visualize what your surroundings and your day are like. Please also clearly indicate the days and hours you will be working at your site.
After my lunch break, I was on my own, along side one of my mentors co-workers, Manny, mentor had to leave early. But knowing I was still able to manage my assignments illustrates that I'm able to work without supervision. The 2nd floor is where the paper work is being runned and the 1st floor is where all the labs and machines are at. Every time someone enters in one of the labs needs to wear a bouffant cap, for safety reasons. I'm usually in the room where the Filling Machine is at since that is where I collect the data from. The Filling Machine is inside a wall shield so the chemicals won't get on anyone surrounded as easily. I'm not able to be inside with the machine due to age restrictions and hazardous issues.
You Made it till Friday! You have successfully accomplished 3 full days at internship. In addition, journal freely about your First Friday at your internship. As the week went down to Friday and I waited for every hour to pass by, I didn't feel that spark of the "IT'S FRIDAY"
feeling. I may not have had 3 days of internship as my peers but I certainly felt the new work load that's already on my shoulders. Even though today was full of new assignments such as, entering data onto an Excel Sheet on torque and weight, filling and viewing/comparing data on another Excel Sheet. It was great having new tasks and interacting with the other adults. I feel comfortable with my mentor, Matias (since he is my uncle). But besides that, I can visually feel the passion he has for helping me understand and further my knowledge in the company, my project and in engineering. Also, now that I have settled in a little more, the stress from the beginning of the internship has washed away. I wasn't completely sure I would be doing anything connected with engineering, but now that I've seen and experimented with the project I feel more confident. I got the sense of how things run at Sekisui. Not only that but I also got news about one of the 11th grade teachers, William Raschke, who is going to be visiting my internship on Monday. So Matias and I are both going to discuss what we've been receiving from the Automated Filling Machine and what we have noticed. Provide a detailed reflection of your first impressions thus far at your internship site.
Be sure to address:
1. Today was not quite as I imagined. Even though it was only the 1st day, I got the feeling that this month is not going to be as hard as I thought it would be. My mentor and I discussed the project that I'd be working on. I also got to begin my IPOL, already documenting information to make sure I'm aware of my project, inside and out, As my mentor introduced me to his co-workers (for any work they could possibly have for me), I noticed that I already have the social skills to survive in the "real world". Communicaton was never really a problem for me, even if I am shy I'm always sure to ask questions and contact those I need in order to move forward in any assignment. But during the process of reviewing data that I would soon need to analyze, I realized I would need too quickly gather and comprehend information. But the one thing I truly enjoyed about my experience today would be the upcoming weeks of being around what I've always wanted to do. I may not be exploring Aerospace Engineering, but any basic engineering knowledge that would help is just enough. The thing is, I'm not looking forward in encountering a situation where I won't know what to do and feel behind on my work. Even though I'll have my mentor to help me along, I don't enjoy the feeling of not comprehending a topic that I would love to understand. I just hope these next few weeks don't go by so fast for me to say, "Wow, it feels as if yesterday I was barely starting my internship!". 2. Besides today being my 1st day of internship, I also got to explore around the building where I will be during my experience as an Intern. It was nice to see that there was a small facility to work with and yet there are many resources available. Throughout the process of the mentor interview questions, I was able to answer the questions by just visually seeing what my mentor does throughout the day. I was also able to see the different areas of work that my mentor supervises. Well, tomorrow's the official FIRST BIG DAY of Internship. What are you most excited about your internship and why? And at the same time, what are you most nervous about and why?
Once I got my Internship position secured, there was a constant ache in my stomach. The fact that I'm going to be on my own and working is a huge step for me. Even though I'll be doing what I would love to do as a career. Although, I am ecstatic in collaborating with my mentor and exploring the work field and my interest in Aerospace Engineering. As of right now, I'm not quite sure if I'm up to the challenge but I feel that by the end of January, I wouldn't want to leave and continue working. But, I'm glad I have this opportunity. |
